Soaring Spirits – A Martial Art performance at the Howard County Chinese School Spring Festival Gala

I waved my hand in the air , getting ready to perform. Today was the day everything had to go perfectly as planned. I took a step forward. My heart was pounding loudly, nervous and excited. As the last group before us left the stage, the leader of the line stepped on stage. I jumped around in excitement, in my royal blue uniform with beautiful golden patterns across it.

Finally , it was time to get on stage. I was the last one in line. I took a final glance before heaving myself up onto the stage. I stared into the nerve wrecking amount of people in the audience. Who were all looking at me. I gulped.

The lights darkened in the audience, and lightened on stage. I looked at my other classmates. They were looking at the audience. The music started to play. It was time to start the dance. I looked straight in front of me. Clenching my fists. But I was not angry, it was a part of the show. I bent my elbows into a fight stance. Standing straight. I waved my left hand to the left side, a second after...My right hand shot in front of me. Well... not a bullet, like a punch. I imagined spirits, soaring through the air, dancing along my movements. Then, I took a step forward. Clenching both my fists. I punched the air as a spirit soared over my head, sending a raft of wind toward my face. I took another step, facing the audience. My right hand over my head, facing up. Another spirit zoomed past my right arm. I moved my left hand in the shape of an upside down L . Then, I turned around. Crossing my right leg over the left. The third spirit laughed as it did loopty-loops in the air. I moved my right arm in “ the upside down L shape”. I squatted down, still crossing my legs. But my left arm punched the air. And my right arm was by my side. The last spirit copied my moves. But the third did Ariel in the front of the stage. (Ariels are side flips) I stood up, balancing on my right leg. My right arm crossed the left arm. Then I squatted down in a ninja pose. As in squatted, I mean fully down. And flung both hands in the opposite directions. I stood up as the third spirit did cartwheels. Both my legs were bent. Left leg was a little less bent, but still not needing to touch the floor nor use any muscle. And most of the weight was on my right leg. My left hand in front of me, and my right hand behind. Finally, I stood up straight. But my hands were by my side, still in fists. I stopped clenching my fists, and stood still. The music ended. We all bowed gracefully and ran off the steps.

Finally off the stage. I smiled. The spirits soared once again. Gracefully flying through the air, how beautiful!
