In this photo of me, I’m in this song and dance group, where we do dances to Chinese songs, celebrate Chinese culture, and perform them. I am in the middle sitting on the floor with my friends. At my school, we would do all sorts of things to celebrate Chinese culture, for example, dances, singing songs, and during the Lunar year we always have the dragon come and perform in front of the school. I really enjoy celebrating Chinese culture because I get to experience a whole new culture at school than when I go home.
I’ve been learning Chinese for eight years, ever since I was three. At my school we would learn all our subjects in Chinese one day, then in English the next.
I went to a Chinese immersion school called Washington Yuying, starting from prek 3 to 5th grade. After 5th grade, I came to Wis for middle school. We only had Chinese as an elective, not a language, so I decided to skip a year since I figured I would be too advanced for the class. Now, I started Chinese again in 7th grade after one year. At some points it was really hard to learn everything at school in Chinese instead of a language I spoke at home because, If I had a question about a math problem for example, It would be explained to me in Chinese not English, which meant I had to get used to learning and speaking everything in Chinese.
I found it difficult, but I enjoyed it! If I had gone to a school that I would just speak english in, then I wouldn’t have the chance of doing this contest or getting to celebrate Chinese culture. Having to go to a Chinese immersion school was an amazing experience for me, and most of all, I got to celebrate a whole new culture and learn new things! 我很喜欢学习中文和庆祝中国文化。I can’t wait to celebrate more and learn more about Chinese culture!
